I am proud to say that I am the 90’s kid and I never had the boon and the bane of technology while growing up. My days were spent mostly playing in the park and reading books…. lots and lots of books. Harry Potter was an obsession right from learning the spells by heart to forming fan clubs, it was a big deal. Besides Harry Potter, my love for Enid Blyton’s books never faded away. The myraid of books that were written by her from The Famous Five , The Secret Seven, The Mystery Series, Malory Towers, The Faraway Trees, The Wishing Chair…Oh I can just go on and on.

It is said you are never alone when you are with a book. Apart from learning the usage of better English and gaining knowledge, reading refreshes the mind. It enhances our imaginative power and analyzing power to a certain extent. However with the birth of the digital era, it seems we have lost our habit of reading. Kids these days indulge in playing video games rather than reading story books or any novels. However, as the saying goes it’s never late to start anything.

Here are some of the ways in which we can inculcate the reading habits-

1. Determination- No its not easy to start reading a any book pages after pages one fine day!!! It does take time and it is ok. Set a goal and be determined to read little everyday. If you feel bored the first day, try again the next day and slowly you will get the hang of it.

2. Take it slowly- Make it a point to read two or three pages of any book of your choice daily. It can even be the newspaper. Gradually aim for reading ten pages daily.

3. Make it fun- Why only novels? Reading also refers to the study books which many students tend to procrastinate till the end moment before exams because of lack of interest in the way it is written. Try to read each paragraph and write it in your own words. Colour code the notes and make it more appealing to the eyes to read.

Make a reading space and a environment. Snuggle with your book and some tea or coffee. Try and make the surrounding quiet and peaceful.

4. Make a list of books to read- Its never wrong to make a bucket list of all the things you want to read. Depending upon the schedule, make it a point to finish a certain number of books per month. This way you get to inculcate our reading habit besides enjoying the book and gaining an insight into different genres of literature.

5. Don’t be too hard on yourself- Don’t make reading a task, then it will be stressful and no fun. Make it a time where you enjoy yourself and relax. If you don’t get the time to read on a particular day, don’t be hard on yourself. It is ok :). It is your “me time”.

Read a little more each day, nurture yourself, build yourself and gain knowledge because it is eternal.
